What Is Combed Cotton?

Combed cotton undergoes an additional preparation process before spinning. Shorter fibers and impurities are removed, leaving longer and more uniform fibers.

This creates a smoother and more refined yarn that is particularly comfortable in socks worn directly against the skin. Combed cotton is well suited to versatile everyday socks, but it is different from fine mercerized cotton hosiery.

Two socks can both be made from 100% cotton and still feel and perform differently. Fiber selection, yarn preparation, knitting construction, thickness and finishing all influence the completed product.

What Is Mercerized Cotton or Filo di Scozia?

Mercerization is a specialized treatment applied to cotton. It produces a smoother surface, more refined appearance, subtle luster and improved regularity.

In Italian hosiery, fine mercerized cotton is traditionally associated with the term Filo di Scozia. Related international terms include Fil d’Écosse, Lisle cotton and Hilo de Escocia.

The result is fine, lightweight hosiery designed for an elegant appearance rather than the thickness or cushioning of a conventional everyday sock.

Organic cotton and mercerized cotton describe two separate characteristics. Cotton can be organic without being mercerized, mercerized without being organic, or both organic and mercerized. Women’s Merino Wool and Silk Socks

Natural fibers bring different qualities to winter hosiery.

Merino wool provides insulation, breathability and natural temperature regulation. Silk contributes smoothness, refinement and lightweight comfort.

Our Italian-made socks containing 75% extra-fine Merino wool and 25% natural silk contain no synthetic fibers in their stated fiber composition. Their fine construction is designed for women seeking lightweight warmth without the bulk of a conventional heavy winter sock.

For a thicker alternative, our substantial winter crew socks contain 55% wool, 20% natural silk and 25% nylon. The nylon supports durability and structure in a heavier cold-weather construction.

Women’s Alpaca and Wool Socks

Our women’s alpaca-and-wool socks are made in Italy from 30% alpaca, 30% wool and 40% acrylic.

The combined 60% alpaca-and-wool content supplies natural warmth and softness. Acrylic contributes practical durability, shape retention and structure.

We state the complete composition instead of describing the product simply as “alpaca socks.” This allows customers to understand both the natural-fiber content and the functional supporting fiber before purchasing.

Women’s Wool Tights and Merino Base Layers

TITTIMITTI® extends its natural-fiber approach beyond socks with women’s wool tights and thermal layers.

Our 75% wool women’s black opaque tights combine substantial wool content with the flexibility required for fitted hosiery. Their complete composition is 75% wool, 23% polyamide and 2% elastane.

Our women’s Merino wool-blend thermal leggings contain 50% Merino wool and 50% polyester. At approximately 150 g / 5.3 oz., they are designed as a lightweight, slim base layer rather than a heavy outer legging.

The polyester supports durability, shape retention and resistance to wrinkling and pilling. We disclose the complete 50/50 composition so customers can decide whether the construction suits their intended use.

Understanding “100%” and Fiber Blends

A 100% fiber claim describes the stated composition of the applicable product or its main knitted fabric. Certain necessary construction components—such as sewing thread, elastic inside a cuff, labels, decorations or trims—may not always form part of the declared textile-fiber percentage.

Some TITTIMITTI® products use only the named natural fibers in their stated composition. Others deliberately combine natural and supporting fibers to provide stretch, durability, recovery or structure.

Neither construction should be hidden behind vague wording. We identify the exact percentages on the relevant product pages so customers can make an informed choice.

Care Guide for Natural-Fiber Socks and Accessories

Always follow the care instructions on the individual product page or garment label, because construction and finishing vary between products.

Cotton socks

Wash in cold or cool water with similar colors. Cotton is sensitive to heat and may shrink when exposed to high washing or drying temperatures. Reshape gently and hang or lay flat to dry. Avoid high-temperature tumble drying.

Mercerized cotton hosiery

Wash gently at a maximum of 30°C / 86°F with similar colors. Avoid bleach and high heat. Air drying helps protect the fine, lightweight construction and smooth finish.

Merino wool, wool and silk socks

Use a gentle wool cycle or hand wash in cold water with a detergent suitable for wool and delicate fibers. Avoid twisting, wringing and sudden temperature changes. Reshape and lay flat to dry.

Alpaca-and-wool socks

Use a gentle cold-water cycle or hand wash. Avoid high heat and harsh agitation. Reshape and air dry.

Cashmere accessories

Hand wash or use an appropriate delicate cashmere/wool cycle only when permitted by the care label. Use cold water and a suitable delicate-fiber detergent. Do not wring. Reshape and lay flat to dry away from direct heat.
