What Does Undyed Cotton Mean?
Undyed cotton is cotton that has not been colored with added dye to create its finished color.
Cotton textiles can be dyed to create black, navy, gray, blue, red, beige and many other standardized colors.
Undyed cotton takes a different approach. The natural coloration of the cotton remains visible rather than being covered by an added color.
Natural undyed cotton is not necessarily bright white. Depending on the fiber, yarn and production batch, its appearance may include shades of ivory, cream, ecru, off-white or natural beige.
These natural shades should not automatically be interpreted as staining, yellowing or discoloration. They can be characteristics of cotton whose natural appearance has not been covered by dye.
What Does Unbleached Cotton Mean?
Unbleached cotton is cotton that has not been conventionally bleached simply to create a brighter, whiter appearance.
Cotton naturally has warmer coloration than the brilliant white appearance commonly associated with many finished cotton textiles.
Bleaching can be used during textile processing to remove naturally occurring coloration and create a more uniform white appearance.
TITTIMITTI® undyed and unbleached cotton products intentionally retain the warmer natural appearance of the cotton rather than making bright white the objective.
Undyed, Unbleached and Organic Cotton Are Different Claims
Undyed, unbleached and organic do not mean the same thing.
Undyed describes color. Added dye has not been used to create the finished shade.
Unbleached describes whitening. Conventional bleaching has not been used simply to create a brighter white appearance.
Organic cotton describes cotton produced according to applicable organic production standards.
Organic cotton can be dyed.
Undyed cotton is not automatically organic.
Unbleached cotton is not automatically organic.
A product manufactured from certified organic cotton yarn is also not automatically a GOTS-certified finished product.
TITTIMITTI® distinguishes these terms because precise material information is more useful than broad or ambiguous terminology.
Why Does Natural Undyed Cotton Vary in Color?
Cotton is an agricultural fiber.
Natural fibers do not necessarily look identical from one harvest, yarn lot or production batch to another.
When cotton is not covered with a standardized dye color, subtle differences between cream, ivory, ecru, off-white and natural beige can remain visible.
Photography, lighting and different computer or phone displays can also affect how these natural colors appear online.
For that reason, one undyed production batch may not appear absolutely identical in shade to another.
Natural does not necessarily mean identical.
Color variation can be part of the natural appearance of an undyed fiber.
100% Organic Cotton vs. Organic Cotton Blends
The phrase organic cotton does not by itself tell you the complete fiber composition of a sock.
Within the broader TITTIMITTI® assortment, different products can use different compositions. Individual product pages identify the actual fiber composition of each product.

If avoiding polyester, nylon or elastane blended throughout the main knitted fabric is important to you, look specifically for a product identified as 100% organic cotton and verify its individual composition.
Two socks can both be described as organic cotton socks while being substantially different products.

For applicable organic cotton production, the approved material includes certified organic cotton yarn sourced from established Italian yarn producers.
After the yarn is purchased for TITTIMITTI® production, Calzificio Piccinelli manufactures the finished socks in Italy from the approved material.
The material decision is therefore part of TITTIMITTI® product development rather than merely a fiber description added after the finished sock has been purchased.

What Is a GOTS Scope Certificate?

A Scope Certificate does not by itself establish that every shipment made by that company to every customer is certified.

Why Transaction Certificate Numbers Change
A Transaction Certificate relates to a particular certified transaction or shipment. It is not one permanent certificate intended to represent every future production batch.
For new applicable TITTIMITTI® production, new yarn can be selected and approved, Calzificio Piccinelli purchases the required yarn for TITTIMITTI® production, and corresponding supplier and transaction documentation is maintained.
Therefore, Transaction Certificate numbers, dates, yarn articles, certified quantities and shipment information can change as new production and yarn purchases occur.

Why We Do Not Call Undyed Cotton “Chemical-Free”
TITTIMITTI® prefers precise textile terminology over broad claims.
Undyed does not mean chemical-free.
Unbleached does not mean chemical-free.
Organic does not mean that a textile has undergone no processing.
Natural fibers pass through multiple stages before becoming finished hosiery, including agricultural production, fiber preparation, spinning, yarn preparation, knitting and finishing.
For that reason, TITTIMITTI® describes the characteristics we can substantiate.
If a product is undyed, we identify it as undyed.
If it is unbleached, we identify it as unbleached.
If its composition is 100% organic cotton, we identify it as 100% organic cotton.
If certified organic cotton yarn is documented, we describe the certification at the material or transaction level supported by that documentation.
Material transparency means saying exactly what the evidence supports.
Organic Cotton Origin and Italian Yarn Production Are Different Things
TITTIMITTI® distinguishes between the geographic origin of the agricultural cotton fiber and the location where the cotton is processed into yarn.
FILMAR S.p.A. and Cotonificio Olcese Ferrari S.p.A. are Italian yarn producers represented in our supply-chain documentation.
That does not mean that the agricultural cotton itself was necessarily grown in Italy.
