At TITTIMITTI®, we do not believe every sock should be built from the same standardized fiber formula.
Different products have different purposes. A sock designed for active everyday use may benefit from additional stretch and recovery. A winter sock requires a completely different material strategy. A lightweight dress sock presents another set of choices.
That is why our collection contains different natural-fiber compositions rather than one formula repeated across every product.
For this particular Italian dress sock, our choice is deliberately simple:
100% fine mercerized cotton.
The Product Determines the Material
Across the TITTIMITTI collection, you will find different compositions because each product is developed for a particular purpose.
Some of our everyday socks use 98% organic cotton with 2% elastane, where additional stretch and recovery are desirable.
Some use undyed and unbleached organic cotton.
Some combine 75% extra-fine Merino wool with 25% natural silk.
And for these men's dress socks, we chose 100% mercerized Filo di Scozia cotton.
We do not add a fiber simply because it has become conventional in modern hosiery. If elastane serves the product, we can use it. If it does not, we do not believe it needs to be there simply because most socks contain it.
Elastane is a design choice, not a requirement of modern hosiery manufacturing.
Why Being Independent Matters
Large-scale retail often depends on standardization. That makes sense when products must be manufactured in enormous quantities and designed for the broadest possible market.
TITTIMITTI operates differently.
Remaining an independent family business allows us to stay close to our products and consider materials and constructions that may not fit the most common mass-market formula.
Instead of beginning with a standardized composition and designing around it, we prefer to begin with the purpose of the product and determine what belongs in it.
Does this sock actually need another fiber? Would a different yarn create a better product for its intended use? Should this particular product prioritize stretch, warmth, lightness, softness or refinement?
These are product decisions—not simply marketing decisions.
What Is Filo di Scozia?
Filo di Scozia is the Italian term traditionally associated with fine mercerized cotton yarn used for refined hosiery and other premium textile applications.
Internationally, related terminology includes Lisle cotton, Fil d'Écosse in French and Hilo de Escocia in Spanish.
Its distinctive character is not created simply by putting “100% cotton” on a label.
Fine cotton yarn can undergo specialized processes including twisting, gassing and mercerization.
Twisting contributes to yarn regularity and strength. Gassing removes projecting surface fibers, helping create a cleaner and smoother yarn. Mercerization modifies the cotton fiber and can improve characteristics including luster, strength, regularity and dye affinity.
Together, material quality and specialized processing help create the smooth, clean and refined appearance associated with fine mercerized-cotton hosiery.
Why Two 100% Cotton Socks Can Be Completely Different

100% Cotton Is a Deliberate Choice Here
Many modern socks contain elastane, polyamide, polyester or combinations of these fibers for specific functional reasons.
There is nothing inherently wrong with choosing those materials when they serve the intended product. But their widespread use does not mean every sock must contain them.
For this model, the knitted sock fabric remains 100% cotton.
That gives customers who specifically prefer a fine natural-fiber dress sock an alternative to conventional blended constructions.
It is not about claiming that one composition is appropriate for everyone. It is about offering real choices between genuinely different constructions.

TITTIMITTI works directly with Marco Piccinelli on our Italian hosiery, bringing our material and product direction together with specialized Italian knitting and manufacturing knowledge.
That relationship allows material and product decisions to be discussed close to the people responsible for actually making the socks.
