Filo di Scozia belongs to a highly specialized Italian fine-cotton tradition.
The protected Filoscozia® tradition specifies fine extra-long-staple cotton, with fibers longer than approximately 34–36 mm, principally from Egyptian GIZA cotton varieties.
The cotton is carded and combed so shorter and weaker residual fibers can be removed before the yarn continues through its specialized processing.
That distinction is important.
100% cotton tells you the composition. It does not, by itself, tell you the quality of the cotton.

The strength of this Italian hosiery district grew from accumulated professional expertise, rapid circulation of technical knowledge, entrepreneurial culture and continuous innovation.

The Brescia area became important not only for manufacturing hosiery but also for developing the machinery used to manufacture it.
Santoni, founded in 1919, describes itself as the first Italian company to manufacture hosiery machines.
Lonati began in 1946 by developing circular knitting machines specifically for men's and children's socks and subsequently became a world leader in hosiery machinery.
Lonati states that its technology today covers approximately 60% of worldwide men's and children's hosiery production.
Busi Giovanni, founded in Brescia in 1958, specializes in high-performance sock-knitting machinery and develops equipment specifically for premium and top-of-the-range hosiery.
