Our Philosophy Begins With What Touches Your Skin

For TITTIMITTI®, the development of a sock begins with the material.

We deliberately focus our hosiery collection on natural fibers and unusually high natural-fiber compositions, including organic cotton, mercerized Filo di Scozia cotton, extra-fine Merino wool and natural silk.

We believe the fiber touching the skin should be one of the first considerations in product development rather than an afterthought.

Rather than beginning with a conventional sock construction and then asking which materials can be inserted into it, our philosophy is to begin with the natural material we want and develop the product around its characteristics.

Marco Piccinelli — Turning an Idea Into a Technical Sock

A product concept is only the beginning.

Someone must understand how to transform that concept into hosiery that can actually be knitted, worn and manufactured consistently.

This is where our collaboration with Marco Piccinelli becomes particularly important.

TITTIMITTI® establishes the product direction: the natural-fiber philosophy, material requirements, intended use, desired character and overall concept.

Marco contributes the specialized hosiery knowledge required to translate those requirements into the technical development of the sock.

That means understanding how different yarns behave during knitting, how construction affects the finished product, and how the characteristics of the material interact with hosiery manufacturing.

Cotton does not behave exactly like wool.

Merino wool does not behave like silk.

Mercerized cotton does not behave exactly like conventional cotton.

And a sock built around 100% cotton presents different technical considerations from a conventional cotton sock containing elastane or other synthetic fibers throughout its knitted construction.

The material and the construction have to work together.

Natural Fibers Require Knowledge

Modern hosiery manufacturers have access to an enormous range of fibers, blends and technical possibilities.

Synthetic fibers can be useful when a particular product requires their properties.

But their availability does not mean that every sock must be designed around them.

For TITTIMITTI®, using a very high percentage of natural fiber is often a deliberate product decision.

Making that decision successfully requires understanding the natural material rather than automatically replacing it with an easier conventional blend.

That is one reason specialized hosiery knowledge matters so much to us.

We want the construction to respect the character of the material.

Elastane Is a Design Choice, Not the Definition of a Modern Sock

Many contemporary cotton socks use elastane because it provides additional stretch and recovery.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that construction when it serves the intended product.

TITTIMITTI® itself uses carefully selected compositions containing small percentages of elastane in models where that is the construction we deliberately want.

But elastane is not what makes hosiery modern or technically sophisticated.

Modern Italian hosiery technology is capable of producing sophisticated constructions from pure cotton and other natural fibers.

For this Filo di Scozia model, our choice is different:

the knitted sock fabric is 100% mercerized cotton.

The Piccinelli Family — Hosiery Manufacturing Since 1970

The Piccinelli family hosiery story began in 1970, when Antonio Piccinelli established the family business in the Brescia area.

The following generation entered the business during the 1980s, continuing to develop the technical skills and manufacturing experience required for specialized hosiery production.

Over the decades, Piccinelli developed experience working with cotton, wool and other fibers, together with continuing stylistic and technological research.
